Title: All About Autumn
Content Area: Special Education Community Readiness Class
Grade Level: All levels 9-12
Objectives/Learning Standards: After reading the book, All About Autumn, student will be able to answer questions regarding the season Autumn. Student will also have to show what page in the book supports their answer. Student will have to explain a personal experience or an event dealing with the season Autumn.
TEKS: Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Literary Nonfiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the varied structural patterns and features of literary nonfiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to analyze how literary essays interweave personal examples and ideas with factual information to explain, present a perspective, or describe a situation or event. (6)
Materials:
Tar Heel Reader Article: All About Autumn
Lesson Procedures:
Students will follow along as the article, All About Autumn is read. (as done in Lesson Plan 1) The students will then answer questions about the article as it is read. Based on the reading, questions such as, “Do you wear jackets in Autumn? Explain to me what leaves may look like during this season?” Questions like these will be utilized to exercise the students’ knowledge of temperature and colors etc. Teacher will also provide visuals for this lesson that may include actual leaves. After answering such questions, teacher will ask student to explain to class an unforgettable experience they may gone through during Autumn. (For example, a fun time during Halloween or maybe raking the leaves with mom or dad)
Supports:
Group work and collaboration is used.
Students will hear and see others’ answers/experiences.
Evaluation:
Level 4: Students will listen to the question and answer with the correct response and explain their personal experience independently.
Level 3: Students will listen to the question and answer with the correct response (written or verbal response)
Level 2: Student will listen to the questions and select (point to) word/picture to respond to question. Student will be provided pictures and will be able to communicative device to explain their personal experience.
Level 1: Students will listen to the questions and indicate the word/picture that answers the question. Review if needed and only give two or three questions to answer from. With the help of communicative device, aide will assist student when explaining personal experience.
